Process: Summer Project #2 Legs, Socks, and Background
After finishing the shoes, I immediately started to layer a variety of colors to achieve the colors and texture of skin for the legs. I tried adding green and red shades to boost dimension before blending them with yellow, orange, white, and peach. To highlight the whitest whites, I used the acrylic markers, stippling white dots over the lightest sections of the leg. I also utilized these markers to add faint scratches and irregularities in the skin.
These dots proved to be useful when I moved on to the socks, as the socks naturally possessed a dot-like design in the photo. I only used white and black colored pencil before moving in with more acrylic marker and graphite to achieve the fine lines of the sock's knit. To finish them off, I added their subtle shadows to the leg in a dark brown colored pencil.
Due to the numerous dots in the main figure, I wanted to keep the background rather simple. I started with chunky posca markers to lay down a base color and then wrote some internal thoughts and feelings on the foreground, almost like they were spilling out of the shoe. I made sure that these phrases were in the same color as the leg scratches, to keep the whole piece feeling connected. To finish the entire drawing, I added just a few more dots in the foreground and background to bring everything together.
