This week, I finished up my still life painting project. It was definitely daunting to add in color at first, let alone finish the piece, but as I added more hues, my confidence grew along with it.
While adding in color, I came to regret a couple of my object choices, namely the pop-it, as the sheer amount of colors I had to match proved to be difficult and laborious. In spite of that, it was pretty satisfying to see the whole painting come together even if there were discrepancies with some textures and colors. I also struggled with rendering the texture of the pop-it, but it luckily became much easier with the repetitive spheres. I honestly wish that I could have worked on this painting for many more hours to concentrate on finalizing a couple of values, but I am happy with the result as my first oil painting.
In terms of critiques and growth, I notice that I left a couple of areas of my painting white, notably in the crevices of the pop it. I was probably so wrapped up in color matching while painting that I disregarded this incongruity, but in retrospect, I wish I had painted over these areas to elevate the realism of the pop-it. In addition, I feel that I did not paint the color of cardboard correctly, as the hue seems inconsistent throughout the work. In the future, I will pay closer attention to other important colors to ensure that I depicted them correctly.
Although I still have quite a few critiques on the painting, I am generally happy with the outcome. Oil painting proved to be very difficult for me, but I tried my best to give it my best shot.
